iMod Case Study: Wind farm monitoring

The iMod telemetric module finds wide applications in monitoring and output management of a single wind turbine as well as of the entire farm.

The dynamic rise of demand for electricity has created a need for new sources of energy supply. In recent years, focus has especially been placed on renewable energy sources. One modern, ecological, and increasingly popular form of supply of electricity used in the power industry is a wind farm.

These are clusters of wind turbines standing on open terrain, converting the kinetic energy of the wind into mechanical work, which, in turn, is converted by a generator into electricity. Wind farms are present on land as well as at sea.

By using the iMod device, the user has the capability of collecting current and factual data pertaining to such areas of turbine operation as:

  • capacity
  • generator operation parameters
  • parameters of use
  • energy efficiency

Besides this, thanks to the possibility for writing data to an SD card or to a database (on the device or external), the user can monitor desired wind turbine parameters in an ongoing manner (or regularly and periodically). This data can be sent via radio by using external radio modems or else directly by means of the GPRS/EDGE modem integrated into the iMod device. It is also worth mentioning the model with the built-in ZigBee modem – these modules are characterized by low energy consumption and the capability of sending information over large distances.

On the basis of analysis of collected data, the iMod device will optimize the operation of the entire turbine system so as to achieve the highest output. An example of this can be control of the servomechanism for directing and inclination of the windmill depending on the direction of the wind.

The logic of such a system can be successfully implemented using the PLC function along with appropriately selected sensors connected to the iMod module. An important element in the operation of wind farms is the alarming of errors and of the places of their occurrence - this is particularly significant in the case of wind farms situated over large areas.

Many factors that can potentially negatively influence output can be predicted - this makes it possible to decrease any losses of output. Thanks to the selection of the iMod module, the user has full control over the operation of the windmill, which is linked to the optimization of all costs and an increase in its output.
